That is the question that all the people ask when thy come to Johannesburg.There is mayor concerns over safety and security and in general Johannesburg has a very bad reputation worldwide, that could be true in certain places in Johannesburg,but then again Johannesburgis big, its has a estimated population of 3225812 people in 2001 (as per wipekedia) now that is excluding all the immigrants from Botswana,Zimbabwe,Mozambique etc. So you have backpackers scattered all over Johannesburg,some is in the city center,some is in Kempton park, Edenvale,Boksburg and Benoni. The most of the Johannesburg backpackers is situated in suburbs of Johannesburg around Johannesburg. So is it safe? well that depends on what you do and more on were you do it. If you go to hilbrow in the night with a camera swung around your neck, and a wallet full of money, that would definitely not be safe. But if you go for example to eastrand mall in the day you will be perfectly fine,providing that you don’t do uneducated things. Johannesburg and backpacking in Johannesburg is like any other city in the world when it comes to backpacking, if you go with a trustworthy company to the city center you will be fine,if you take a local taxi or minibus to the city center, well then you take your Chance’s. I have been backpackingin Southern Africa now for the last 12 years,I grew up in Benoni and we are living a normal life, there is a high security factor in all of South Africa,dogs electric, fences and security companies but at the end of the day is you take South Africa’s estimated 45 million people then its all in perspective. So there is a lot to do for backpackers in johannesburg, but you cant compare it with cape town.
