What is a citymate? | Back to Top
citymates are experts of their cities. They have the local knowledge
and insights to tell you where you can find what you´re looking for. All our citymates
are volunteers who keep our community up to date with what is going
on in a city and help answer specific questions of travellers.
How can I become a citymate? | Back to Top
Do you know your city? We mean, do you REALLY know your city? Do
you like to help other travellers to get around? Then contact us
at citymates@mycitymate.com.

The citymates are all volunteers and other members of the site,
similar to yourself. Some mates may respond within a few hours,
while others may take a week or two. If a citymate doesn't respond
to your question within a fortnight, please send us a message and
we'll contact them to make sure they still want to be a citymate.

Installation
How do I get the application to my mobile phone? | Back to Top
Once you have the application on your computer there are various possibilities for transferring the file to your mobile phone.
- Through cable connection
If you have a data cable with your mobile phone you can use this to transfer the file. You might have to set-up software
provided with your mobile phone in order to be able to do this (e.g. Nokia PC Suite). You can then drag and drop the
file on your mobile phone. Then it will most likely appear in the manager/file manager. On the Sony-Ericsson P900/P910i,
in the main menu choose Applications -> Install and mycitymate will appear in the list. After installing it will appear
in the list of applications (towards the bottom).
- Through infrared (IR/IRDA) connection
You can also transfer the file through an infrared connection. You will need to activate the infrared connection
on your mobile phone and make sure that your computer has an infrared interface as well. You can then send the file
via the infrared data transfer window to your mobile phone. It will most likely be stored as an incoming SMS message.
- Bluetooth
This works similar to infrared. You need to make sure that the Bluetooth connection is activated on your mobile phone.
Then you can send the file to your mobile. It will most likely be stored as an incoming SMS message.

iPod Information
Will mycitymate work on my iPod? | Back to Top
The mycitymate iPod guide will work on any iPod that implements the "Notes" feature. This means
it should work on all 3, 4 & 5G iPods (any sold since May 2003) that have a screen (e.g. not the iPod Shuffle)
Why are some venues missing in my iPod guide? | Back to Top
The iPod can have a maximum of 1000 notes in its memory at any one time. After this the files are ignored. The
mycitymate iPod guide will never contain this many, but if you have many other items in your
notes folder (other mycitymate cities for instance) this could be the problem. Delete some unneeded files.
Can I install other cities and update existing ones? | Back to Top
Your iPod can hold several cities - as long as you don't exceed the 1000 note limit mentioned above. If you want to
replace your existing guide with a newer version, we reccomend you delete that city from the Notes
folder before adding the updated version.
Troubleshooting
The transfer of the file just stops. What is wrong? | Back to Top
There could be various reasons why this is the case. One of the main reasons is that there is not enough free memory
on your mobile phone. Please make sure that the space is sufficient before you install the application. Also if you are
re-installing mycitymate make sure to quit any previous version before re-installing.
I cannot establish an infrared connection | Back to Top
Please check that you have activated an infrared connection on your mobile phone. Also check whether the infrared
port on your computer is working properly. Make sure the settings on your computer allow an infrared connection with
another device and that you can send files to other devices.
I cannot establish a bluetooth connection | Back to Top
On your mobile phone, make sure to turn on blutooth and activate "discovery". This will allow your computer to connect
to the mobile. It may ask you for a passkey - choose a 4 digit number and enter it on the computer as well as the mobile
when prompted.
The installation seems to be taking too long - is this right? | Back to Top
Depending on the size of the jar (Java application file), which is based on the amount of venue information you've chosen
for your download,
mycitymate may take a few minutes to install. Be patient. Additionally, when using
mycitymate, press the red (hang-up) button on your handset instead of choosing "quit" from the menu.
Next time you load mycitymate it will return quickly to the last page you were on.
During the installation it says that the file is from an "untrusted source". Is this a problem?
This only means that your phone has not recognized a certificate confirming that our content rights are protected. You
can just confirm the installation by clicking "Yes" and proceed.
If you have any problems with installation, please send us some
feedback
with the details, and we will look into it.
Moting
What is moting? | Back to Top
With moting you can now make your voice heard in real-time. Now you can send your reviews and opinions about the places
you visit while you are on the road. As soon as we receive them they will be instantly integrated into our database.
Together we're creating the first "real-time" travel guide on the planet!
How does moting work? | Back to Top
It's completely integrated into our mobile application, it's easy and it will take only a few seconds. On the venue
pages in the mobile application choose "Add Review" from the menu. This takes you to a page where you can quickly rate
the venue in various categories. Simply select the radio buttons and click on them. Then you can either add an
additional comment or send your mote straight away.
Is there anything else I need to do? | Back to Top
You can mote anytime you like, but it will not be integrated into our guide until you register on the website. This is
to ensure that we know who is sending the review.
Why do you need my mobile phone number? | Back to Top
We only need your mobile phone number to be able to match you and the mobile reviews you send. Without this we don't
know who sent the mote. We do NOT use your phone number for any other purpose, NOR do we make your phone number
available to any third party. You can find more information on how we handle your data in our
Privacy Policy .
How much does moting cost me? | Back to Top
moting is no more expensive than any regular text message you send. We do not charge you any additional fees for moting.
Since your regular text-message fees vary, depending on your contract, your location, and other factors we cannot give
you the exact cost. Please check with your network provider to find out how much the fees will be exactly.
Can I later change my mote or add to it? | Back to Top
When we receive your mote you will receive a confirmation email at the address you specified during registration.
This will contain a link to the venue page on our website so you can verify or expand on your posting.
If you have an additional question for which you couldn't find an
answer here please contact us.
